Shemar Moore is returning to CBS with a high-profile new role.

The actor, who exited CBS’ Criminal Minds last season, has been tapped to star in the network’s drama pilot S.W.A.T., The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Based on the 2003 feature film of the same name that was inspired by the 1975 TV series produced by Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg, the project revolves around a locally born and bred S.W.A.T. lieutenant (Moore) who is torn between loyalty to the streets and duty to his fellow officers when he’s tasked to run a highly trained unit that is the last stop for solving crimes in Los Angeles.

Moore will take on the role of Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson, the character played by Samuel L. Jackson in the feature film. The character exudes calmness but is always ready for action. Hondo has all the ability to become a leader — he’s just not happy with the reason he just became one. In addition to starring, Moore will also be credited as a producer.

Aaron Thomas (Friday Night Lights) will pen the script and executive produce alongside Shawn Ryan, Marney Hochman, Neal Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Danielle Woodrow and Justin Lin, with the latter set to direct the Sony Pictures Television and CBS Television Studios pilot. Stephanie Sigman co-stars.
