JOY105.COM EXCLUSIVE WITH CHRIS HOGAN!
“There are principles we can teach kids early about how much to spend, save and give”
Joy105.com: Chris, when did you know this was your calling to work in the financial arena?
Chris Hogan: I think for me it came pretty early on while I was in college. I love the business world! I love people! It was just a natural fit for me!
Joy105.com: Did you major in Business and Finance?
Chris Hogan: No, actually I majored in Communications the business side came out more when I was in graduate school.
Joy105.com: Would you say that most people are at a lost when it comes to managing and saving their money?
Chris Hogan: There is a lack of awareness and with the lack of awareness people don’t have a plan.
“You can’t begin to control anything unless you have a plan”
Joy105.com: When should we start teaching our children about finances?
Chris Hogan: As soon as they begin to talk! I say this tongue and cheek, but …
“There are principles we can teach kids about how much to spend, save and give”
If we start here we give them a foundation of how to relate to money and how to be effective with it.
Joy105.com: Chris, tell us about the 3 E’s?
Chris Hogan: As I go across this country speaking at different events I had to decide my personal mission statement. I want to educate people on money principles, business principles and leadership, but I want to also encourage people!
“People are so easily overwhelmed that they have to understand I can do this …”
I think by giving people encouragement you show them how to make changes.
My third E is empower!
“People have to realize that they have to take control for themselves and we have to be owners of our results”
Joy105.com: Do you have any regrets leaving the banking industry?
Chris Hogan: At the time, I was being prepared for what I am doing now. I understood while working for the bank I was looking out for the bank bottom line, first and foremost.
In my time there I realized I was spending a lot of time educating clients on their options and I was actually steering them in the direction that was best for them.
It may not have been best for the bank, but it was best for the customer/the client. So I realized my heart as an educator and encourager was coming out so it was time for me to move forward.
Joy105.com: You have coined the phrase, “relating better with your money” what does that mean?
Chris Hogan: If you think of it within the lines of family when you relate to family you have relationship. Relating with money especially with married couples is very essential because we all come to marriage with our habits.
Each family probably did things a different way, but if I can help a married couple realize that they are in control and they get to establish their new habits, communicate and relate together …
“Now they get to tell their money where to go instead of wondering where it went”
Joy105.com: How can a single mother making minimal a year be a blessing to others and still pay her own bills?
Chris Hogan: I definitely have a heart for single mothers! As you can imagine over the years I have run into a lot of situations and some broke my heart!
“So, the first thing I want to do is congratulate and encourage the single mothers for taking care of her obligation (their children)”
I want her to begin to understand she has to make clear definition of what she has to take care! What are the absolutes?
Then, we begin from there. We have to make sure there is shelter, food, clothes on their back dealing with the basics then we establish ground rules from there.
Joy105.com: What does faith teach us about finances?
Chris Hogan: From a spiritual stand point, you must realize and acknowledge that God owns it all… EVERYTHING! We have just been called to be good stewards over the things we have and have been blessed with. Knowing this first, cuts down on confusion and helps you to understand that:
“Your job as a steward is to manage resources and that is your time, your money as well as your energy, so you have to use that well!
Joy105.com: What did you discuss at Bishop Jake’s Manpower Conference? Ladies want to be nosey! (Lol)
Chris Hogan: We talked about money, how men view money, how men can lead in their homes and work to do a better job! Too often our society gives us our definition of what a man is, at Manpower we talked honestly, openly and real about the true definition of a man!
